1) This discarded costume of terror.
Whoever left this suspicious outfit behind in the woods is probably a horror movie villain or a serial killer. Maybe both.
2) These roaming driftwood zombies.
Although these eerie specters are an art installation created by Japanese artist Nagato Iwasaki, suddenly stumbling upon one in the dark forest may lead to nightmares.
3) This crumbling headstone in all its irony.
Nestled in an abandoned cemetery discovered in the woods of southern Georgia is this ironic gravestone. Although the grave marker remains “not forgotten,” the identity of whomever is resting underneath it is long gone.
4) This unattended missile casually resting among the trees.
Found in the woods of Tennessee is this scary-looking piece of artillery, which appears to be a missile or rocket that’s long been left to rot.
5) This suspicious story of the forest MIB.
“My husband and I were hiking up a mountain in the Pacific Northwest. It's perpetually muddy due to a large number of waterfalls along the sides of the trail, so there's no way you can avoid getting at least a little dirty.
Around an hour and a half up the trail, we passed two men wearing black suits, black hats, black glasses, holding black leather briefcases, and wearing black dress shoes - completely clean dress shoes, and immaculately clean, pressed pants. Not a spot of dirt or a wrinkle on either of their clothes.
As we passed each other, one of them whispered something in German. I looked back at them, and they were both standing still and looking back at us, staring. It was all so surreal.”

6) This strategically patterned boneyard.
Although there is an alleged livestock dumping ground in these woods, the systematic arrangement of these animal bones (they’re all animal bones, right?) is questionable.
7) This headless robot body.
Found in the woods behind someone’s home, I’m not sure what’s scarier - full-sized robots running around the forest, or the mad scientist who’s out there building them.
8) This lonely death oven.
In the middle of the forest on an uninhabited island is a small crematorium. Although no people live here, it’s probably a safe bet to say there are some ghosts in residence.
9) This medieval-looking metal face mask.
Has the man in the iron mask escaped again? The photographer of this creepy artifact described his find:
“So I was out fossil hunting last weekend when I happened upon something…strange…I have no idea what to make of it. Maybe someone tossed an old art project down there. Maybe someone stole it off a statue. I really have no idea. It looks like it’s been down there for a while. The forehead design, mouth and one of the ear/strap holes have been sealed shut by thinly melted copper, and sand concretions. There are still some small holes in them. There’s quite a bit of sand concretions on the face of the mask too.”
10) This piked doll head.
An unsettling discovery no matter where you find it, this sinister doll head on a spike in the woods has got to be a warning or a trap, so it’s probably best not to touch it.
11) This very unusual spot to set up your office.
“When I was 15, my family went on a cross country trip and one night we camped in the Grand Canyon. We went to a ranger lecture around 6pm (this is summer) so it was still pretty light when we were walking back. We went off the trail as a shortcut and after walking a ways noticed a light up ahead. As we drew closer there was a man sitting at a desk in the woods with a latern. Just a full wood office-sized desk in the middle of the woods. I distinctly remember he had long sideburns and feeling like he was dressed like a man from the 1800s. My dad backed us down towards the trail and we went on our way. The man never made a peep or looked up or acknowledged us. There were two adults and three teenagers and we all remember the event really clearly. I don't believe in ghosts or spirits but have no explanation for what I saw. As I got older I figured I was misremembering but everyone else in my family says they saw the same thing.”

12) This altar of Elmos.
Beloved Sesame Street character Elmo can be pretty annoying, but this tree altar of Elmos piled and nailed up in the woods seems a little like overkill. (Pun intended?)
13) This reflective experience along the trail.
“About two miles into a solo hiking/camping trip, I came across a five-foot mirror. It was just standing there in the middle of the trail, propped up between two small trees.
Never saw or heard anyone else while I was out there. The real scary part was that it wasn't there on my way back out.”

14) This grim altar of bones, sticks, and shells.
Whether it’s a staged scene or an active altar, this creepy setup in the woods is scary enough to send you running back the way you came. I think I’d rather find the Elmo altar.
15) This scene that could have inspired the movie Smile.
“When I was around seven, I went with my brothers for a walk in the nearby forest. We were walking on a road in the middle of a forest when we saw a woman staring at us from between trees. We thought nothing of it, but a while later, the same woman was still staring at us and following us, hiding behind trees.
We started to freak out. She was just staring at us with a faint smile while hiding in the woods. This is where we just started to scream and run. We manage to get out of the forest, and the woman was no longer there.
I never saw this woman again, but this was one of the scariest experience in my life.”

16) This 300-pound gluten nightmare.
I know it can be difficult to cook just the right portion of pasta, but this is a bit extreme. Although not scary in the traditional sense of the word, the discovery of 300-400 pounds of pasta dumped in some New Jersey woods was shocking to local residents and an annoyance to clean up. After an investigation into the illegal pasta disposal, authorities revealed that a resident had wanted to get rid of his “very large collection of pasta” - enough to fill about 15 wheelbarrows - but declined to identify the pasta hoarder.
